Democratic Education as a possibility is familiar to many, however what needs to be done at this juncture is to delve further into what it entails, how it can become a practice in our lives, whatever we do, wherever we are!
This series is designed for families, schools, learning programmes, NGOs, learning organisations, and anyone committed to fostering a democratic culture.
Overview…….Organisation……Learning.…..Relationships
In this workshop series, we will explore the fundamental ideas behind democratic education by learning from the experiences of democratic schools around the world.
The course consists of four sessions:
Session 1: Tue, 8th Oct 2024, 7:30am-9:00am CEST : Overview – Why Democratic Education?
Is democratic education merely an alternative or innovative educational approach, or is it a new paradigm that has entered the educational landscape? If it is indeed a new paradigm, what does it aim to achieve and transform in the world of education? This session will explore the deeper philosophy behind democratic education and its potential to reshape how we perceive learning, decision-making, and the role of students and teachers.
Session 2: Tue, 15th Oct 2024, 7:30am-9:00am CEST : Organisation & Structures – Managing Systems with Democratic Tools
How can decisions be made, implemented, and conflicts resolved using democratic principles? This session will delve into practical ways to use democratic structures and tools within families, schools, educational institutions. These may apply to any organisation too that is wanting to transform itself to a learning organisation.
We will explore how these tools foster participation, shared responsibility, and the development of social and emotional skills in educational environments.
Session 3: Tue, 22nd Oct 2024, 7:30am-9:00am CEST : Learning – Implementing Personalized Learning with Collective Responsibility
How can each student create a unique learning plan while maintaining high levels of accountability and collaboration within a school or learning environment? This session will focus on practical methods to implement this approach in both private and public educational institutions, and importantly, how this can be done without incurring additional budgetary costs.
Session 4: Tue, 29th Oct 2024, 7:30am-9:00am CEST : Relationships – Multigenerational and Multicultural Dialogue in Democratic Education
How do we grow through dialogue with those who think differently from us? In this session, we will explore how democratic education serves as a foundation for education for peace, promoting growth through diverse perspectives and fostering understanding across generational and cultural differences.
